Two passengers (Sobieski and Zahn) and the conductor (Glover), discover that a person has died on their Night Train cabin after taking an overdose. They come across “valuable jewels” in a small box which the person had brought with him, that they wish to keep for themselves. So, to make it look like the man never boarded the train, they conspire to dump the corpse in a river that the train passes by.
Their scheme to get rid of the corpse escalates to the point where they have to chop up his body just to fit him into a very small trunk. This is only the beginning of intricate plot-twists, mainly revolving around the changing desires of each person on board the train. The treasured box plays with the souls of the people on board the train. Who ever looks into the box will be corrupted by their own soul and in somehow will not live to see the next sunrise. The box shows them anything that will enhance their greed to the limits; emeralds, gold and diamonds just to name a few. By using this greed, as is explained in the film, the box fiddles with the emotions and fears of anyone looking into the box and causes them to covet it even beyond their own sets of morals and basic humanity.
